By on April 21, 2014

Rock on the Range is a three day metal and rock music festival in Columbus, Ohio during the weekend of May 16, 17, and 18. There will be bands you recognize and bands you do not recognize, and this preview will help jumpstart your memory on bands you know well, bands you have not listened to in some time, and bands that you will become fans of while at Rock on the Range! There will also be comedy at Rock on the Range with the Rock on the Range Comedy Tent featuring Jim Breuer, Jim Florentine, Don Jameson, and more!

To add to the comedy segment of Rock on the Range, on Thursday, May 15 there will be a comedy roast of lead vocalist for Slipknot and Stone Sour, Corey Taylor. Sebastian Bach will be the Roastmaster for this occasion. For more information about ‘Roast on the Range’ please click here. Tickets are still available for this separate event.

Kid Rock

Latest Album: Rebel Soul (2012)

Detroit’s native son is coming to Columbus to headline the last day of Rock on the Range. Kid Rock, creator of American Badass Beer (I need to try it sometime!), exudes what it takes to be a true rock musician. From his garb to his onstage presence to his deep enjoyment of the art, Kid Rock is one of the few guys that truly gets rock ‘n roll. He also understands how to treat his dedicated fans right. You may not agree with his earlier music (I thoroughly enjoyed it), but you have to agree Kid Rock is one of the best there is in rock.

Five Finger Death Punch

Latest Album: The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 1 & Volume 2 (2013)

The Way of the Fist was a huge freshman album for Five Finger Death Punch and set the tone for what they would always be about – hardcore metal, powerful lyrics, and guttural vocals (when necessary). If you have not given Five Finger Death Punch a chance (I feel bad for you) then I suggest starting where they began with the aforementioned The Way of the Fist. After you get that feel for them, make your way to one of their next four studio albums, then go see them live on the last day of Rock on the Range.

Alter Bridge

Latest Album: Fortress (2013)

Another Detroit music act appearing on the final day of Rock on the Range, that act is the alternative rock, post-grunge Alter Bridge. Alter Bridge has a slightly different approach to rock music than Kid Rock, but the two acts do Detroit proud. Both acts have several accolades, but Alter Bridge sports the “41st Greatest Guitar Song of the Decade” per Total Guitar for their 2010 song “Ties That Bond.” That’s quite the recognition.

Mastodon

Latest Album: Once More Round the Sun (2014)

In another piece, I listed Mastodon as one of the fifteen must see acts at Bonnaroo this summer. Why?  Mastodon is the future and present state of metal as a genre, and that is a wonderful and gnarly thing because they are brilliant. Each album has different concepts and themes found throughout every song, which are told like a story – an epic some would say. If you have never given a metal band a chance, I suggest you begin with Mastodon and truly listen to the lyrics and how the lyrics fit perfectly with the music.

Wolfmother

Latest Album: New Crown (2014)

Though they took a brief hiatus in the middle of 2013, Wolfmother is prepared to take 2014 and make it theirs. Wolfmother consistently draws comparison to Led Zeppelin because of similar musical style and overall demeanor of the band members. Led Zeppelin even had Wolfmother appear as their (Led Zeppelin) guests and Wolfmother performed a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Communication Breakdown” – a song that Wolfmother frequently covers during their own concerts.  They may not be Led Zeppelin but they are pretty darn close; not as close as the next act in this preview!

Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience

Latest Album: N/A

Jason Bonham is the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Jason has followed in his father’s footsteps and became a professional drummer for an array of bands. Jason occasional performs with Led Zeppelin. The title of Jason’s band “Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience” is just that – a Led Zeppelin experience!

Of Mice & Men

Latest Album: Restoring Force (2014)

Of Mice & Men may be the best live metal band I have had the privilege to see. I was in utter awe listening to lead vocalist Austin Carlile scream is guts out song after song. I cannot imagine the intense pain he must feel after ever concert, but he is a true warrior in that respect. To go along with the impressive vocals, Of Mice & Men sounds even better instrumentally live than their studio albums – and those albums are fantastic too! I expect their performance to be one of my favorites of the day.

Adelitas Way

Latest Album: Home School Valedictorian (2011); 2014 studio album is TBA

Las Vegas based hard rock Adeltias Way is known for the hit song “Sick” that reached #1 on Active Rock Radio for the summer of 2011 and for their other song “The Collapse” which reached #2 shortly after “Sick” reached #1. Despite these two hits, Adelitas Way has struggled to gain mainstream attention, but, with a consistent lineup finally set, Adelitas Way is ready to showcase their talent. Expect hits from their unnamed studio album due out sometime this year.

Trivium

Latest Album: Vengeance Falls (2013)

Trivium has been a band since 2000, but over the course of nearly 14 years the band has released six studio albums – many of which tell stories ranging from Greek mythology to “famous killings.” That touch of care into their songs as stories shows the quality of band that Trivium is; I personally enjoy songs that have meaning attached than some mindless songs that frequent the radiowaves, though I agree mindless songs serve their purpose in other ways. Give Trivium a chance if you love metal and you love great storytelling.

Gojira

Latest Album: L’Enfant Sauvage (2012)

Also known as Godzilla, Gojira has a nearly two decade discography to showcase on May 18 – the final day for Rock on the Range – though technically their first album was in 2001. This metal band from France will make you drop your silly stereotypes of the French being wimps, and will scramble your brain from pure metal bliss that will echo through the speakers when they perform.

Miss May I

Latest Album: Rise of the Lion (2014)

From my home state of Ohio is the Metalcore band, Miss May I. I first came across Miss May I while at Blossom Music Center in Cleveland, Ohio (specifically Cuyahoga Falls) for Warped Tour (Summer 2012). I was blown away by the emotion I could feel in lead vocalist Levi Benton’s voice and the overall ability that Miss May I unleashed on the main stage at Blossom Music Center. They earned a fan that day in 2012, and you will become a fan after witnessing them at Rock on the Range.

We Are Harlot

Latest Album: Debut studio album to be released summer 2014.

We Are Harlot are supposed to be simply known as Harlot, but the band is currently working through copyright and legal issues to become Harlot. Nonetheless, We Are Harlot will display the musical style of “true” rock n’ roll bands like Aerosmith and Van Halen. Give the below video a listen to see if you agree.

Heaven’s Basement

Latest Album: Filthy Empire (2013)

Although Heaven’s Basement has been a band since 2008, their first studio album, Filthy Empire, was not released until 2013. Filthy Empire singles “Fire, Fire” and “Nothing Left to Lose” reached as high as #12 and #17 respectively on the U.S. Act Charts; quite the charting numbers for a band’s first pair of singles. Heaven’s Basement has the perfect opportunity to prove their worth on the last day of Rock on the Range.

Gemini Syndrome

Latest Album: LUX (2013)

There’s not much I can say about Gemini Syndrome other than buy their album and check out their sick music video below!

Kvelertak

Latest Album: Meir (2013)

Have you ever crowd surfed? Have you ever been in a mosh pit? Have you ever just hardcore danced your neck off? If you have, or haven’t, then Kvelertak is your band of the day because you’ll be participating in all three and then some. Kvelertak switches between English and Norweigian lyrics depending on the song choice, but, no matter what, you’ll feel the energy at full force and right in your face.

The Jim Breuer Band

Latest Album: N/A

Jim Breuer is more than just a comedian and actor (appeared in Half Baked), he is a passionate metalhead. He is so passionate that he sometimes fronts a band known elegantly as The Jim Breuer Band. Come witness Jim Breuer on stage jamming out, after you listen to some of his comedy earlier in the music festival!

Twelve Foot Ninja

Latest Album: Silent Machine (2012)

No, Twelve Foot Ninja is not literally a twelve foot ninja, though I have to admit that would be a cool sight to behold; rather, Twelve Foot Ninja is a progressive metal band from Melbourne, Australia. Twelve Foot Ninja’s debut album came with a comic by English artist Keith Draws (perfect name for an artist) which I believe is one of the coolest additions to an album purchase that I have ever heard of in the past decade. The comic follows a ninja trying to make it through the apocalypse. I would love to get my hands on that comic. Twelve Foot Ninja is an experienced band that has made myriad festival appearances (domestically and internationally), despite only being a band officially for six years.

Monster Truck

Latest Album: Furiosity (2013)

Another Truck themed band at Rock on the Range (the other being Truckfighters), Monster Truck isn’t a “souped up” truck jumping over dirt hills, but rather they are a “souped up” rock band from Canada. Monster Truck won the 2013 Juno Award for “Breakthrough Group of the Year” and they are determined to prove that they are still a solid band (they are) at this year’s Rock on the Range.

Sleepwave

Latest Album: Currently working on debut studio album; single “Rock and Roll Is Dead and So Am I” available now.

Spencer Chamberlain, formerly of Underoath, has created this band Sleepwave with Stephen Bowman with the intention of entertaining as many people that will listen.

”I believe in the power of a song and I believe in rock n roll but I also believe it is time for change in music. This is me bringing back things I think are missing from rock and pouring my heart and soul into my music to share with as many people that are willing to listen.” Spencer Chamberlain.

Though Sleepwave does not have an album out, their single (below) is dynamite and available for free download on their website.
