Review: Chris Cornell in Boston Nov. 15, 2013

Chris Cornell brought his Songbook tour to the Shubert Theatre in Boston Friday night, November 15, 2013. Chris guided his audience on a 3-hour tour of his career, stopping along the way for covers of other artists.

SC1A8407Set on stage was Chris, surrounded by 7 guitars, a harmonica, a record player, a stool and a bright red telephone to add that living room vibe.

Chris started off with guitar in hand and harmonica around his neck and opened with “Bend in The Road,” fans knew from the first note they were going to be in for a wonderful evening.  Cornell made use of the small venue, bantering with the audience, telling stories about different songs, thanking Boston for all the support no matter which band he brought into town.  He even sang along to LP’s that played the instrumental components for the songs “Silence the Voices” and “When I’m Down.” Chris paid homage to different musicians who played a role in forming his life with a slowed-down version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” He also covered Led Zeppelin’s “Thank you, ” Cat Steven’s “Trouble” and ended with the Bee Gees, “To Love Somebody.”  Not quite halfway through the night that one audience member, not me this time, shouted out “Free Bird!” Chris quickly responded, “you know you aren’t suppose to request that song till the end of the show.”  Chris being Chris, though, plugged away into “Free Bird” and ended it short, noting “I need 4 southern men to carry that ending.”

Each Song Chris played he performed with the love of music. He clearly focused on making sure his audience enjoyed the ride through the years. He dipped into his own band catalogue with “Wooden Jesus” and “Hunger Strike” of his Temple Of Dog days. From Audioslave, he ripped through “I am the Highway,” Wide Awake,” “Like a Stone” and “#1 Zero.”  Soundgarden songs brought more of the casual fans into the loop with “Halfway There,” “Fell on Black Days,” “The Day I Tried to Live,” “Blow Up the Outside World,” “Burden in My Hand,” “Zero Chance,” “Outshined” and “Black Hole Sun.”

From the casual fans to the knowledgeable, and to the woman next to me who was there because “Chris turns women into jelly” none went home disappointed!  See the complete photo gallery here, and please leave your comments below instead of FB.  https://www.onstagemagazine.com/chris-cornell-unplugged-boston-2013/
