Let’s Hear It For Those Hall and Oates Fans

By on November 19, 2013

Contrary to popular belief I am a Daryl Hall and John Oates fan. The duo’s fan base most likely doesn’t believe it though. They’ve “unfriended” me on Facebook, banned me from their H & O Facebook pages, sent me emails threatening to sue me, called me names, and posted comments calling me an “old hag” but that’s okay because most of them are about my age. I have written some things about H & O and some of the band members that has caused their fans to get angry.

I tell things as I see them. I’m not always right and I don’t mind being corrected but why the name calling?

Some of my reviews of Daryl Hall’s “Live From Daryl’s House” were a tad sarcastic but when an episode was good I never hesitated from saying so. Unfortunately, the H & O fans only read and comment on my sarcastic articles about the duo. But that’s okay too, I’m used to it.

Now it’s time for me to give all those die hard Daryl Hall and John Oates fans their due kudos. Hall & Oates has finally been nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) and it’s about time.

The RRHOF is letting fans vote for their top five favorites out of the 16 nominees. According to the RRHOF, “The public has the opportunity to vote for the five nominees they believe to be most deserving of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a ‘fans’ ballot’ that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2014 inductees, who will be announced soon.”

Honestly, I’m not quite sure what that means. Will the fans’ votes really help determine who will be inducted or is this a way to make fans think they have a say?

For the first few days of voting H & O were in the top five, well mostly they were in fifth place but then the Peter Gabriel fans started voting and before you could say, “I Can’t Go For That, No Can Do,” Daryl and John dropped to sixth place.

Uh oh, sixth place, not good. The cries went out on all the H & O Facebook pages and boards. (Yes, I might be banned from the Facebook pages but I have my sources.)

“Start voting!” the ladies commanded each other. They bragged how they were spraining their voting finger by pressing the H & O box hundreds of times a day. One woman told me that she spent 4 hours one day giving the duo a total of 1,100 votes all by herself. Now that’s a real fan or something.

“Keep voting!” they shouted, “‘The Boys’ are only 1,773 votes behind!” (Let me comment here by saying that both of “The Boys” are well into their 60’s, but then again, so am I.)

H & O fans stepped up their voting. I think they voted in shifts. Those who couldn’t vote as much as they wanted to during the day because of work or taking care of the grand kids got the night shift while the ladies voting during the day got to sleep for an hour or so before they got back online and voted some more.

Peter Gabriel’s fans must have been doing the same thing. Whenever H & O gained some ground on the very talented Gabriel his fans stepped up the voting process too. But nothing and no one can beat a Daryl and John fan because slowly the duo started to gain ground.

“Vote, vote!” John Oates’ Facebook page pleaded. Soon other members of the H & O band got into the campaign.

It worked. As of this moment, this day, this time, Daryl Hall and John Oates now has 52 more votes than Peter Gabriel. I bow down to all the fans who voted for “The Boys.” I bow down to their perseverance. I give them all due credit.

Will Daryl and John actually be inducted into the RRHOF? Ehhh, I don’t know. Even if they end up solidly in 5th place, I don’t know. Let’s hope they do because if any group belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame it’s Daryl Hall and John Oates. I believe that with all my heart. They’ve done so much for music in their 40 plus year career. It’s time they were take seriously.

Maybe the Facebook H & O lady fans will “friend” me again and allow me back on their boards. I kind of doubt that. Too bad.

Let’s listen to “Rich Girl” and remember why H & O is the best selling duo of all time.
