Can A Girl Have Too Many? ‘Suitors’ By Wonky Tonk
Every once in a while you come across an artist or a song that is a little out of the ordinary. It’s not what you would normally rush to hear, or even consider it anywhere near your comfort zone. But you listen, smile, and want to hear it again. That pretty much sums up “Suitors,” the new single from Wonky Tonk.
Wonky Tonk is Jasmine Poole, self-professed ‘Punk Rock Cowgirl,’ and her music reflects her inner conflict of having a punk soul but a folk and country heart. It’s quite an interesting combination.
“Suitors” takes on slut-shaming from a first person narrative; apparently a girl can have “too many suitors.” She turns it on its head with matter-of-fact delivery balancing perfectly against the up-tempo melody. While the story unfolds and you’re tapping your toes, you can almost hear this Kentucky born songwriter whispering under her breath, “bless your little heart.”
Her style isn’t quite Loretta Lynn country, but it’s not new fake country either. It’s simple and creative and satisfies the need for something more than twang but with less angst than folk. Having a unique fashion style, again think punk cowgirl, Wonky Tonk looks to 5 year-olds for inspiration. “They pick out what they think is cool and do they go together? Who cares, they are cool… and probably sparkly.” So sparkly punk cowgirl, complete with boots, just might be trending real soon. With any luck, there will be a lot of suitors too.
