Fuel For The Fire – 40th Anniversary Edition arrives September 29 on vinyl and digital; “Changing By Degrees” was released August 29.

Composer and pianist Alan Goldberg will release Fuel For The Fire – 40th Anniversary Edition on September 29, 2026, completing a musical conversation that began with an independent vinyl release in 1984.

Originally created in a basement studio in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Fuel For The Fire emerged from a period of intense exploration with piano, synthesizers, reel-to-reel recording, progressive-rock influence, and the desire to capture a larger musical world. Copies of the original vinyl found their way into record stores around Minneapolis, but the album had only a limited opportunity to reach listeners.
More than four decades later, Goldberg returned to the project with a different question: what was the music still trying to become? The answer led to a collaboration across time. Original performances remain woven through the new album, joined by new guitar, live drums, orchestration, expanded arrangements, modern production, and the perspective of a different season of life.

“The project was not asking to be revisited. It was asking to be realized,” Goldberg says. “The recordings waited until I was listening again.”

The finished album moves through spark, seeking, choice, transformation, discovery, courage, growth, warmth, and acceptance. Its sound blends instrumental progressive rock, jazz-fusion energy, cinematic keyboards, guitar, drums, and piano-centered storytelling.

The first single, “Spark From The Dark,” was released July 29. “Changing By Degrees,” released August 29, extends the album’s transformation arc through dynamic movement and gradual change. The complete album follows September 29 on vinyl and digital.

For Goldberg, the project also revealed continuity across later work. Themes of possibility, choice, transformation, and realization that surface explicitly in his 2025 album CreateBecome can now be heard as part of a longer creative current whose earlier signal was already present in Fuel For The Fire.

Track / Album Story

Spark From The Dark opens the album with guitars, synthesizers, piano-driven motion, and a sense of emergence from shadow into signal. Changing By Degrees expands the arc with dynamic movement and transformation, suggesting growth not as a single dramatic event, but as a series of shifts unfolding across time. Crossroad and the title track deepen the album’s sense of searching, reflection, longing, and choice.

Chasing Stray Flames carries the feeling of purposeful gathering — the search for scattered pieces of fire, memory, and intention, and the joy of finding something once thought lost. It moves with perseverance, recognition, and inner momentum, as if fragments from different points in time are being drawn back into the same circle.

Taberah brings ritual intensity and progressive-rock fire, calling the listener forward into the unknown journey. Warm Enough turns inward with a more reflective emotional weight, carrying an energy of mourning, release, and letting go. Album closer CONSUMED brings enough compositional mystique to warrant many re-listens, and it could very well be the opus of this powerful release.

“Fuel For The Fire began as an independent instrumental vinyl release in 1984, recorded in a basement studio in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota using reel-to-reel tape machines, synthesizers, piano, instinct, and whatever equipment I could afford at the time.

Back then, making a record felt almost mysterious. There was no internet, no streaming, no tutorials. You learned by experimenting, making mistakes, talking to people, reading magazines, books, manuals, and trusting your ears. I was completely absorbed by progressive rock, synthesizers, recording gear, and the possibility of capturing the music I heard in my head. I played the piano a lot.

For a long time, I avoided revisiting the album. I was making new music. The music that was on the vinyl no longer matched what I heard in my head. I kept telling myself I needed to move forward. Eventually I understood that returning to Fuel For The Fire was about realization.

Something inside me kept repeating: ‘You’ll receive more when you realize what you’ve already been given.’ That shifted everything.

This project became a collaboration across time between who I was then and who I’ve become now. The original recordings remain woven throughout the album — old tracks shadowing new performances, original atmospheres blending with modern textures. I wanted the energy and intention of the original recordings to remain alive inside these new versions.

The process itself became part of the meaning. I used modern AI stemming tools, vinyl transfers, MIDI conversion, live drums and guitar, new orchestration, and additional performances to uncover and rebuild pieces of recordings that had been sitting dormant for forty years. Hearing isolated tracks from those old tapes felt like opening sealed rooms in time.

Thematically, Fuel For The Fire follows a journey through awakening, longing, decision, growth, service, gratitude, and surrender. Looking back now, I can see these same themes continuing through many of my later albums, including CreateBecome. It’s the same unfolding story viewed from different points along the path.

There is also something deeply meaningful about bringing new collaborators into this realization — especially my son Marcus contributing guitar parts to music originally created before he was born. The circle does go round and round.

I hear continuity. I hear movement. I hear growth by degrees. Most of all, I hear gratitude for having the chance to realize this music in a completely different season of life.”

What began as a return to the original recordings slowly became something much deeper: a realization across time.

The new version of Fuel For The Fire blends original recordings with newly performed and re-recorded parts, allowing younger and older versions of the artist to coexist inside the same musical space. Original performances remain embedded throughout the album like signals appearing and moving through time.
