Austin Prog Rock and Jazz Fusion composer Alan Goldberg releases bold, musically untethered new album “CreateBecome”

Austin-based Progressive Rock and Jazz Fusion composer Alan Goldberg has stepped fearlessly into the unknown with his bold and musically untethered new album “CreateBecome”, released on March 10th. His fifth full-length album is a deep meditation on a life-long, universal philosophy of being in the moment. Although there are layered themes and genres intertwined through this visionary record, the approach reflects humility, reflection and personal growth experienced through the tapestry of collaborative creative energy and personal power.
“CreateBecome” is a forty year old mantra I use, and the title of my fifth album. Repeating CreateBecome over and over is a focus that I use to be purely In the moment. It’s also a perfect title for the eleven songs on this album. The songs are linked together by what I’ve learned in my life, through paying attention, making choices, and changing, hopefully growing.
The eleven songs are a melodic mixture of alternative and progressive rock, jazz, swing, and a tapestry of genres. Piano plays a central role throughout the album, driving the melodies in the foreground and background as well as steering the emotional flow with solos and interludes. Piano, Jazz Ensemble instruments, plus guitar and some strings are the palate used to dive into musical observations about life and growth.
CreateBecome has the feel of a classic prog rock album, with a theme or story. I like feeling like I’m on a musical roller coaster ride and just letting go and have the music take me somewhere. It’s fun to weave the piano within the song as it happily plays with the other instruments. Melody, rhythm, and harmony are important and takes me places – to a higher vibration – which is useful for growth and transformation. CreateBecome is a constant cycle.
The overall arc of the album are musical themes derived from my observations about living and growing. It starts with a statement of continuity and permanence in “Unbroken Chain”, through the experiences of creating, making choices, changing, asking questions, pursuing goals, managing emotions, growth, and making decisions.”

Like a classic prog rock album, CreateBecome feels like a journey, a story in motion. The interplay of rhythm, harmony, and improvisation lifts the spirit—an ascent to something higher. Growth. Change. Becoming.

Full Bio:
Longtime Austin-based musician and composer Alan Goldberg uses his passion for melody, harmony, and the divine to fuel his compositions. Anchored by the piano and supported by jazz, progressive rock, and blues, his musical explorations flow from prog rock to mellow jazz in a seamless web of musical storytelling.
Goldberg is a boomer. His roots are in the music that he came of age with – The Who, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, Chick Corea, Frank Zappa. Sure, those bands kept making music and he always listened. But it’s about those first years when they were putting out their core work and the feeling of being surprised and unsure where things were heading musically that he liked. That feeling is what he wants to recreate with his music, in his unique style. Goldberg wants to create the same experience for the listener that he had growing up, when he would put a new album on the turntable, sit in his dad’s big recliner, and as the needle dropped, not know what to expect, or where the music would lead him.
He followed that branch of music from his roots over the years and found artists that, to him, sustain the spirit and feeling of those bands. with strong melodies and harmonies Bands like The Dear Hunter, Coheed and Cambria, Circa Survive, Between the Buried and Me, and lots of Blues and Jazz thrown into the mix.
Goldberg grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, lived in Minneapolis – think Prince, The Replacements, and Peter Himmelman – for many winters, and now lives in Austin, Texas the land of Stevie Ray Vaughan. He’s played in local blues/rock bands for the past 20 years. It all comes together in a well-seasoned stew of musical inspiration.
He often uses an improvisational piano style to record the initial piano tracks, captured live, then adds tracks of ensemble instruments. This approach gave birth to
“Passion No Distraction”, as well as his previous three albums, “Fuel For The Fire”, “Small Acts” (solo piano), and “Chasing Stray Flames”.
The music from his first three albums is used for meditation, yoga, relaxation, and background music in spiritual settings. Goldberg plays a fusion of prog rock, blues, and jazz in “Passion No Distraction”, and returns to jazz ensemble in “The Show EP”.
“My technique works well with video. I watch. I play in real time, and then I discover the piece. It can work well when I’m watching something that directs passion in a particular way. Everything can spark an inspiration. “
