Ajay Mathur, the acclaimed and Grammy nominated singer-songwriter releases his new single ‘Common Mistake’ from his current multiple awards-winning album ‘Talking Loud’. In November 2022, ‘Common Mistake’ won the coveted The Artists Forum Music Competition 2022 in New York in the category ROCK / ALTERNATIVE. On December 17, the German Pop Foundation honored Ajay Mathur with no less than 4 awards at the jury award ceremony of the 40th German Rock & Pop Award 2022. Ajay’s album ‘Talking Loud’ and his band won in the following categories:
Best English-language Album of the Year 2022
Best Alternative Album
Best Crossover Band
German Alternative Award
The yearly “German Rock & Pop Awards” are presented to outstanding emerging music groups and artists, as well as to selected professional bands and individual artists by a jury of experts. Similar to the Grammy Awards in the USA, the sole criteria of the German Rock & Pop Awards is the artistic quality. In its cultural and artistic orientation, this cultural event stands in conscious contrast to other event ceremonies of industry awards and commercial TV stations. The awards in over 125 different musical genres are intended to reflect today’s musical diversity in the field of rock and pop music.
These awards mark yet another highlight in the success story of Ajay’s album “Talking Loud”. Already an earlier single from ‘Talking Loud’, “DEEPER THAN YOUR SKIN” won the Venice Fullshot Film Festival, “REAL” was semi-finalist of the 2021 UK Songwriting Contest and winner of the Roma Short Film Festival, and “STOP THE SHAME”, winner of the 2021 New York The Artists Forum International Music Competition in the indie / singer-songwriter category. All songs from “Talking Loud”, underpinning the album’s remarkable track record.
Ajay reflects on the ‘Common Mistake’: “As a cultural collective we tend to make the common mistake of looking in the wrong direction or assuming that certain things in life are set in stone by the virtue of convention or tradition, when we are searching for meaning. Much of what we focus on is driven by the ideas and distractions that are fed to us by way of upbringing, media, peers, institutions, etc. We feel like we need to conform – buy the right things, have the right job, wear the right clothes, focus on material, fit in even if it doesn’t seem quite right – instead of really taking a good, hard look and discovering what makes us individual, unique and our lives worthwhile. Even if that means being able to stand ourselves outside of how we are expected to behave and think.”
Common Mistake, written by Ajay Mathur & Mary Lou von Wyl, hits home when it comes to reflecting on the national psyche, especially in the age of entitlement, self-focus and fear. This attitude is magnified and laid bare in the song as it asks uncomfortable but consequential questions –
(Song lyrics) “Do you fill yourself with fear of all the things you cannot buy? There’s someone whispering in your ear, about the things that make you high? Can you ever be alone? Has your desperation grown? Of all the things we need to shake. Still make the common mistake. Oh no, making the common mistake… You can blame it on your fate. Believe it’s written down in stone, imagining that it’s too late and all your chances have been blown. Could it be that you are wrong, and you’ve known it all along? It’s the mould that’s hard to break. We make the common mistake. Oh no, making the common. Oh no, making the common. Oh no, making the common mistake. I see it written on your face. Something’s turning in your mind. But you get caught up in the race. And make the common and make the common mistake. Oh no, making the common. Oh no, making the common. Oh no, making the common mistake. Because you’re caught up in the race. Nothing’s moving in your mind. I see it written on your face. You’ll make the common, you’ll make the common mistake.”

Artist Bio:
Eclectic, grounded and always surprising – that’s how the extraordinary trademark sound of Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Ajay Mathur can be described. A musical cosmopolitan and smooth shifter between the stylistic worlds, the Swiss by choice with Indian roots now presents with his fifth longplayer “Talking Loud” probably one of the most multifaceted albums of the year!
Ajay Mathur does not allow himself to be pressed into any stylistic pigeonholes. The charismatic singer and musician fearlessly lives out his almost childlike joy of experimenting and exploring. A quality that earns him well-intended comparisons with legends like Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Tom Petty, Leonard Cohen or the Beatles.
“`Talking Loud` is my metaphor for self-confidence and self-esteem,” Ajay says, exuding an artistic confidence and self-awareness that Ajay has already demonstrated on previous albums “A Matter Of Time” (2011), “Come See Conquer” (2013), the Grammy-nominated “9 to 3” (2015), and “Little Boat,” released three and a half years ago, which was awarded “Germany’s Best English-Language Album of 2018” by the German Pop Foundation. “Ajay Mathur has lived a life worthy of a motion picture,” as Jonathan Frahm of the British-American magazine FOR FOLK’S SAKE accurately concludes.
