On Friday, March 7th, the Glasgow Film Festival will host the world premiere of Stationed At Home, the debut feature film from award-winning filmmaker Daniel V. Masciari. Set on a clear and frigid Christmas Eve in 1998 in Binghamton, New York, the story follows a solitary taxi driver working the graveyard shift as he eagerly awaits the sight of the International Space Station. As the hours count down, Ralph’s plans are upended by a parade of offbeat characters, leading to unexpected connections and a shared moment of wonder. Poetic, hilarious, and often absurd, Stationed At Home is a tale of unity, resilience, and discovering one’s place among the stars.
This extraordinary black-and-white drama showcases Masciari’s talent as a storyteller and marks a significant milestone for the film’s dedicated cast and crew. The premiere is one of the most anticipated highlights of the festival, celebrated for its dedication to championing emerging talent and cinematic excellence.
Written, directed, and edited by Masciari, Stationed At Home is a testament to the power of perseverance, vision, and community. Hailing from a working-class background as the son of an Italian immigrant, Masciari defied the odds to bring this project to life on a shoestring budget. With no major studio backing or Hollywood connections, he rallied a team of passionate collaborators—many of whom were students from The Actor’s Workshop of Ithaca under the mentorship of producer and acting coach Eliza VanCort.
Masciari wrote the roles specifically for this group of performers, many of whom share a deep connection through their Meisner Technique training. Their commitment and chemistry, coupled with Masciari’s direction, result in performances that have drawn comparisons to the best of independent cinema.
Masciari’s talent as an editor allowed him to meticulously plan each shot, rewriting scenes on the fly and capturing the magic of Binghamton, NY, with precision and ingenuity. This resourceful approach, paired with his belief in the cast and crew, brought Stationed At Home from a grassroots dream to an international stage at Glasgow.
The film’s atmosphere is elevated by its evocative score and soundtrack. Composer Logan Nelson, named Best Young International Composer at the World Soundtrack Awards, masterfully combines acoustic compositions with upbeat techno elements, capturing the film’s nostalgic yet otherworldly tone. Additional music comes from acclaimed bands Gaucho and The Horse Flies, whose unique styles enhance the narrative’s emotional resonance.
The visual style of the film owes much to the work of cinematographer Jackson Jarvis, whose evocative black-and-white imagery creates a nostalgic yet timeless aesthetic. Jarvis, a seasoned filmmaker with accolades such as the Spirit Award for Short Narrative at the Brooklyn Film Festival, collaborated closely with Masciari to craft the film’s distinct mood and rhythm, perfectly complementing its heartfelt narrative.
The film’s cast features a remarkable blend of experienced talent and first-time feature film performers, all delivering performances that have captivated early audiences. The ensemble includes Jamie Donnelly (The Rocky Horror Show, Grease), Darryle Johnson (The Manhattan Front), Erik Bjarnar, Misty Monroe (Small Time, StoryBots: Answer Time, Home Sweet HomeGoods), Eliza VanCort, and a host of gifted actors who studied under VanCort. In addition to her mentorship, VanCort contributed to the production as a producer, drawing on her years of experience directing and producing plays.
In addition to Masciari’s visionary direction, Stationed At Home is brought to life by a dedicated team of creative professionals. Producers Bethany Hedges, Eliza VanCort, and Matt Fleck were instrumental in supporting Masciari’s vision, assembling a talented crew to realize the film’s unique aesthetic and heartfelt storytelling. From Jackson Jarvis’s evocative cinematography to Molly Longwell’s thoughtful production design, every detail reflects a deep passion for independent cinema.
