Serbian Indie Pop band Bitter Blue craft eccentric earworms on new EP “Levity”

Serbian Indie Pop band Bitter Blue artfully craft eccentric earworms with a subversive glee on their impactful “Levity” EP, out now on digital platforms. Unapologetically, they delve deep into challenging, sometimes twisted emotions with a reckless abandon that provides the songs with a sense of mischief.

“After years of playing in bands, I didn’t want to compromise anymore. That might sound harsh but the point is I wanted this EP to be unapologetically me, without any filters in the way. At the same time, I knew I wanted some of my best friends to be involved; people I’d known and loved for years but somehow never put anything to tape with, as it were. This made the process enjoyable without sacrificing any of the work’s artistic integrity.”

Picture a literal pile-up of calamity and stress expressed intuitively through a razor sharp pop sensibility, and the formula of Bitter Blue becomes evident. This is music that wears its heart proudly on its vulnerable sleeve for all to see. Deceptively catchy, this unique group unite with a singular, groove-driven formula.

“A lot was going on in my personal life at the time, with one implosion seemingly following another in very short succession and for some time too. It was a lot for any one person to take and I had my own ways of dealing with it all. Some of those ways were healthy, others less so but one fact remains: being holed up in the studio during that period made everything way more bearable, even beautiful in its own twisted way.”

“Some of us in the band are big fans of the British comedy sitcom Peep Show, and more specifically one of its characters called Super Hans. So much so, in fact, that Hans ended up becoming the hero of the EP’s cover art (shoutout to our designer and label manager Nenad Tasić!). This was a total act of randomness which later revealed itself to be a logical choice if ever there was one, especially given my state of mind back then. There is a little bit of Hans in all of us – those who have watched the show will know what I mean!”

Sonically, this 4-piece is lean, perfectly in sync and focused on hyper-catchy, always punchy indie rock, pop and alternative, taking cues from the likes of The Strokes, Foals, The Smiths, The Neighbourhood and Bloc Party. Allowing tension as a guide, Luka Nikolić (main songwriter, guitar player, lyricist), Stefan Milojković (drummer, producer), Milan Mirić (singer, lyricist) and Miloš Dabetić (bass player) conjure an imposing signature sound that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

Artist Bio:

Built on an equal love of 2000s indie rock and pop choruses that live rent-free in your head for weeks on end, Bitter Blue is the musical alter ego of Luka Nikolić hailing from Niš, Serbia. What started out as one man’s wish to channel life’s less-than-stellar moments into something uplifting and pure ended up becoming an entire creative mission: to express oneself creatively with no regard for limitations of any kind – self-imposed or otherwise. The band’s first EP Levity was released in May 2024 through Tribal Rajber. Featuring the catchy lead single Someone Better, their debut release comprises five tracks written by Luka and produced by Stefan Milojković who’s also in charge of drumming duties. Milan Mirić and Miloš Dabetić complete the lineup on vocals and bass guitar respectively.

In a lot of ways, the Levity EP came about as a celebration of friendship between four prolific individuals who had known each other for years but somehow never committed anything to tape together until recently. Drawing on a shared pool of influences and numerous past projects, the band got to work at Stefan’s Buzz Box studio and came out the other end with five honest tracks spanning the entire range of the emotional spectrum – from love and lust to hatred and despair, and everything in between. Given the personally tumultuous times in which the EP was conceived, to say the process of writing and recording was therapeutic would be an understatement.
